Florence Groninga, 81, of Ackley, died September 3, 1998 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

She was born December 28, 1916 in Radcliffe, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Martha Tysdale Newhall. She graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1934 and Iowa State Teachers College. She taught school south of Ackley.

On August 1, 1940 she married Mervin Groninga at Bethal Lutheran Church in rural Radcliffe.

Mrs. Groninga was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Ackley. She did mission work in Tama and was associated with mission service to the Oklahoma Indians.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include: her husband, Mervin; two daughters, Carmin Courtney of Plato, Missouri and Cynthia Kohlmeier of Memphis, Tennessee; two sons, Brian of Geneva and Kevin of Ackley; two grandchildren, Brian Dean and Kyle Lee and one brother, Robert Newhall of Radcliffe.

A memorial service was held September 13 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Ackley with Rev. Alan Schultz officiating.

Interment was in West Friesland Cemetery in Ackley.

Brand-Fritz Funeral Home in Ackley was in charge of the arrangements.
