Ackley--Mervin Heyo Groninga, 88, of Ackley died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church at Ackley with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Randy Crane will officiate.

Mervin was born June 21, 1914, to George and Kate Hayenga Groninga in rural Ackley. He graduated from Ackley High School and on Aug. 1, 1940, he married Florence Newhall at the Bethel Lutheran Church at Radcliffe. They farmed in the Ackley area. Mervin was a member of the West Friesland Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon.

He is survived by two daughters, Carmen Courtney of Plato, Mo., and Cynthia Kohlmeier and husband Robert of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Brian Groninga and wife Teresa of Geneva and Kevin Groninga of Hampton; a foster son, Darwin Morgan, of Tama; two grandsons, Brian Courtney and wife Kimberly of Monroe and Kyle Courtney and wife Christina of Concord, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Wallace; and two sisters, Josephine Bishop and Myrtle Zwyers.

Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley is in charge of arrangements.
