Andrew A. Meyer Died After A Short Illness

Andrew A. Meyer, who was born in Grundy county and spent most of his life here, died about 8 o'clock Wednesday evening from peritonitis at the Deaconess hospital at Marshalltown.

Mr. Meyer had been in good health until three days before his death. On Sunday he was troubled with a pain in his side, but didn't think much of it until a day later when a doctor was called. The doctor diagnosed his trouble as appendicitis. Mr. Meyer was taken to Deaconess hospital at once for an operation. After the incision was made the attending surgeon discovered that peritonitis had set in in an aggravated form and they did not remove the appendix. The surgeons regarded the case as hopeless.

News of Mr. Meyer's death was heard with deep regret by the many people in Grundy county who knew him in the localities where he resided before he moved to Marshalltown. He had gained also a wide circle of friends in Marshalltown who shared with older friends joint grief in his loss.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Central Church of Christ, Marshalltown, in charge of the local pastor, Rev. P. G. Dennis. Burial was in Riverside cemetery, Marshalltown. The body was at the Pursel funeral home until Friday when it was taken to the home of Mr. Meyer's son, Oran, from where after a short service it was taken to the church on Saturday afternoon.

William Meyer, nephew of the deceased, sang beautifully "Oh, Some Morning," and H. Drost sang "In the Garden," a favorite hymn of Mr. Meyer.

Raised on Colfax Twp. Farm
Mr. Meyer was born and raised on the Meyer homestead farm a mile south of Drake's church in Colfax township. He was born June 23, 1884, leaving him a little past 51 years of age. After his folks moved to Wellsburg, Mr. Meyer was employed in the farm machinery business of his father and brother and later entered the employ of D. J. Beving, who bought the Meyer business.

Married in 1909
Andrew Meyer and Florence Doyen of Wellsburg were married at Alvord, Iowa, Nov. 22, 1909. They started housekeeping at Wellsburg and six years later they moved to the Meyer farm in Colfax township where they continued to live until nine years ago when they left the farm and moved to Marshalltown. Mr. Meyer opened a suburban grocery in Marshalltown in which business he was engaged at the time of his death.

Andrew Meyer was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arend Meyer, long time residents of Grundy county. There were eight children in this family. Andrew was the first of this large family to be called.

Surviving are the wife and son Oran, two brothers and five sisters. The brothers are P. A. Meyer of Wellsburg and J. A. Meyer of Holland. The sisters are Mrs. A. J. Kruse, Wellsburg; Mrs. C. Haack, Parkersburg; Mrs. George A. Geerdes, Mrs. George Lindaman and Mrs. H. C. Haack, all from Wellsburg.
