Forrest B. Ashby Dead in Philadelphia
Son of Owner of This Paper Was Buried Tuesday
Telegraphic communication to Mrs. Neil R. Ashby at Wellsburg Saturday morning announced the death of her oldest son, Forrest B. Ashby, in Philadelphia. No details were given.
The following article appeared in the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin of last Saturday:
Forrest Bee Ashby, 35, an assistant professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, was found dead today in his apartment.Police said all the jets of a gas range in the kitchen of the apartment at 4527 Walnut st., were tuned on. Professor Ashby was on a bed in his room adjoining.
The door between the two rooms was open, but all other doors and windows had been closed, police said. No note was found, police said, and the apartment was not disturbed.
Professor Ashby, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, and onetime captain of the varsity wrestling team, has been a member of the faculty several years.
John Jackson, 40, colored, a porter, found Mr. Ashby shortly before 8 a.m. Jackson said he was walking in the hall when he smelled gas.
He knocked on the door and unable to gain entrance, forced it open. He said Mr. Ashby was clad only in pajamas.
Another attendant in the apartment house said he had seen Mr. Ashby about 4:30 a.m.
Professor Ashby had a fine record at the University, Thomas T. A. Budd, chairman of the banking and real estate department at the Wharton School said.
"Dr. Ashby's sudden death comes as a severe shock to the faculty of the Wharton School, with which he was closely identified," Mr. Budd said, "He was a man of excellent character, well liked by his students, and appreciated by his colleagues as a man of high intellectual ability."
Professor Ashby, whose home was Wellsburg, Iowa, received his degree of B. S. S. in June, 1912. He obtained his Master of Arts degree in 1924, his Ph. D. in 1926, and his L. L. D., in 1931. He was appointed instructor in finance in September, 1924. He was promoted to assistant professor in July 1, 1929.
