Romane C. Baskins, Former Local Band Instructor, Dies Sat.
Romane Charles Baskins, 59, former Wellsburg instrumental music teacher, died in Allen Memorial hospital early Saturday morning, April 18, following a lingering illness.
Services were held at the home in Aplington and later in the Aplington school auditorium Tuesday. The Rev. Levi Akker officiated, assisted by Rev. Donald Patet, who read scripture and the Rev. Wayne Gehman, who offered prayer. The Rev. G. W. McMachuels of Waverly was in charge of the committal service at the Harlington cemetery in Waverly.
Mr. Baskins was born in Bremer county, Iowa, near Waverly, June 20, 1899, the son of Charley and Minnie Baskins.
He devoted most of his life to the entertainment world in the field of music, playing in theatres, circuses and music festivals, and for the last 23 years taught instrumental music in Aplington, Wellsburg and the surrounding communities.
He married Jennie Williams June 20, 1950.
He is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. Charley Baskins of Waverly; a sister, Mrs. Frank Curtis of Waverly; and a foster brother, Max, of Lincoln, Nebraska. His father preceded him in death in February, 1956.
The pallbearers were Virgil Claassen, Wendell Hoekstra, Tom Hoekstra, Edo Bronsema, Lyle Elliott and Heiko Brouwer.
Many Wellsburg students and other people from here attended the funeral, which was a very large one.
