Rites Held For Maude Simms

Maude M. Simms, 97, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1987, at Oakview Nursing Home where she had resided for the past five years.

Born February 11, 1890 in Havelock, IA, she was the daughter of George and Ellen Crouse Mills. She attended school at Havelock and Conrad and also graduated from Marshalltown Business College. She taught country school in the Beaman and Conrad areas and had been employed as secretary for a law firm in Marshalltown and also for a legislator in the Iowa House.

She was married to William H. Simms, Jan. 1, 1914, in Albion, IA. They farmed in the area prior to moving into Conrad in 1944.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Conrad, and its Presbyterian Women; Eastside Country Club, charter member; St. Elmo Chapter O.E.S. #398. She enjoyed and was active in politics and the church and Farm Bureau with her husband.

Survivors include one son, Paul M. Simms of Beaman, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1976; two sons, William S., and J. Ed Simms; and one sister.

Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1987 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Conrad, IA with Rev. Timothy Soule officiating. Organist was Mrs. Doris Martin.

Casket bearers were Phillip, Stephen, Joel and Bradley Simms, Larry Arp and Christopher Arp. Honorary casket bearers were Dale Smith, Charles Neff, Harold Minnich, Ross Hayes, Vernon Bein and Daryl Dennis. Flower bearers were Doris McKibben and Evelyn Rolston.

Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Beaman, IA, with Johnston Funeral Home in charge.
