Herman Viet Services Held

Herman J. Viet, 71, of Hudson, died Friday, April 3, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of complications following heart surgery.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 6, at the United Methodist Church in Dike with the Rev. Rick Johnson officiating. Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. Full military services provided by the Andersen Amvets Post #82 of Hudson.

A memorial fund has been established.

Herman was born July 18, 1926, the son of George and Fannie (Berends) Viet. Herman was united in marriage to Mary Alice Pierce on August 15, 1950, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Parkersburg. Herman was a veteran serving in the Army.

Herman was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dike, the Amvets Post #82 of Hudson. Herman was active volunteering his time to Trees Forever, and to Meals on Wheels. Herman farmed in Lincoln township and retired from Viking Pump in Cedar Falls. Herman and Mary ran Country Crafts during their retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ben; and an infant brother.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; 3 daughters, Pamela and husband Steve Syhlman of Waterloo, Marleen and husband Mark Slatterly of West Des Moines, and Peggee and husband Robert Frost of Cedar Falls; a son, Dennis and wife Shelley of Dike; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a brother, George and wife Mabel Viet of Grundy Center; 3 sisters, Martha and husband Herman VanHauen of Grundy Center, Jennie Bakker of Dike and Elisabeth Clapp of Dike; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Viet of Allison.

Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the arrangements.
