Military Rites Honor Willys Benson

Willys Benson of Reinbeck, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 1996, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa, of natural causes, having attained the age of 77 years.

Willys was born on July 6, 1918, in Marshall County, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Edith (Read) Benson. On April 25, 1946, he was united in marriage with Mary Hum in the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Willys was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dike.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Joan Held.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Reinbeck; one son, Richard and wife, Karen, of Dike; one son-in-law, Edward Held, of Waterloo; one sister, Bernice Depping of Dike; and four grandchildren, Amanda Held, Chris, Kevin, and Russell Benson; and a special nephew, Larry Depping.

Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, June 8, 1996, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dike with burial following in the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike, Iowa. Full military graveside rites were conducted by the Dike American Legion Post #471.

Pallbearers were Kurt Cesielski, Ron Cesielski, Larry Depping, Paul Hum, Steven Hum, and Henry Penning.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

The Dike Funeral Chapel in Dike, Iowa, was in charge of the professional arrangements.
