Rites Held For Byrl Dodd

Byrl Dodd, 83, of Dike, passed away Sunday, October 13, 1996, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 16, at the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in rural Grundy Center. Pallbearers were Jerry Dodd, Mark Stover, Aaron Dodd, Austin Dodd, Virgil Muller and Darwin Cannegieter. Burial followed in the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike.

Byrl Dodd was born on November 26, 1912, the second of four sons born to John and Grace (Jones) Dodd. He grew up on a farm near Conrad, attending high school and participating in sports during and after high school.

He was united in marriage to Bernice DeGraff on February 14, 1946 in Prairie City. They were married for 50 years while Byrl farmed near Grundy Center for the first seven years. They then moved to a farm near Dike in 1953. He semi-retired from farming in 1977.

During retirement, he enjoyed his many fishing trips with family and friends and various trips with Bernice. He enjoyed the many activities and events in which his grandchildren participated. He was a member of the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church, serving in many capacities over the years. A devout Christian, he led by example in the home and in the lives of those he touched. He gave freely of himself while serving on the local cooperative board of directors, as a 4-H leader and as coach for Little League.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Glen.

Survivors include his wife Bernice of rural Dike; daughter Diane Dennis and husband Tim of Hamilton, Illinois; his sons, Dennis and wife Jean of rural Dike, Daryl and wife Amy of Anaconda, Montana, and Duane and wife Kathy of Okoboji; two brothers, Leo and wife Katherine of Brooklyn, Iowa, and Lyle and wife Janice of Davenport; one sister-in-law, Hazel Dodd of Grundy Center; 14 grandchildren, Alaina, Jenna and Matthew Dennis of Hamilton, Illinois, Andrea, Austin and Aaron of Dike, Lindsay, Heidi and Sarah of Anaconda, Montana, Barrett of Fosteria, David of Hazelwood, Missouri, Amy of Garland, Texas, Kristi of Ames and Mark of Mason City; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley of Garland, Texas, and Brendan of Hazelwood, MO.

A memorial fund has been established. The Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of funeral arrangements.
