Sonia Fay Derrick, 40

Sonia Fay Derrick, 40, of Grundy Center, died Monday, May 14 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident Saturday evening.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16 at the Dike-New Hartford High School in Dike. Pastor David Dykstra officiated. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. A memorial fund has been established.

Sonia was born January 5, 1961 in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Bernard and Betty (Webrand) Beninga. Sonia graduated from Dike High School in 1979 and then later attended LaJames College of Hairstyling. She owned and operated Hair Designs by Sonia located in Dike. On June 1, 1996, she was united in marriage to Jason Derrick in Reinbeck. Sonia was a member of the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in rural Dike.

Survivors include her husband, Jason of Grundy Center; daughter, Kay Danielsen of West Des Moines and her fiance Craig Flanagan; son, Lane Danielsen of Ames; and Reagan Derrick at home; her parents, Bernard and Betty Beninga of Dike; three brothers, Les Beninga and his wife Annette of Parkersburg, Dean Beninga of Lincoln and his friend Lisa Rohach, and Byron Beninga and his wife Patty of Parkersburg; two sisters, Eileen Beninga of Cedar Falls and her friend Diane Lansink, and Jean and her husband Leon Meester of Holland; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

The Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
