Leon Kelly Rand

Services for Leon Kelly Rand, 16, of 420 Dunham Place, are pending at Parrott and Wood Funeral Home.

The youth died at Riverside, Calif., of injuries suffered in an auto accident Friday afternoon.

He and three other passengers in a car driven by Gary Smelser, 17, of Waterloo, were killed in the crash. Smelser was reported in very critical condition at a Riverside hospital.

Two of the other victims were from Riverside and one was from Oregon.

According to police, the Smelser vehicle went out of control while traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line of a Riverside street and collided with a car driven by a Riverside woman. She was listed in serious condition.

The two Waterloo youths reportedly left here five months ago to visit California.

Mr. Rand was born July 7, 1961, in Waterloo, son of Les and Lois Fanning Rand.

He is survived by his mother, of Yuma, Ariz.; his father and step-mother, of 420 Dunham Place; a half-brother, Tommy Rand, of 1541 Garden Ave.; three brothers, Larry Rand, of Jesup, Leslie Rand of Yuma, Ariz., and Leroy Rand, of Anamosa; two step-brothers, Gary Reuter and Donnie Joe Reuter, of 3714 Center St., Cedar Falls; three step-sisters, Kathy and Susan Stapleston, of Dysart, and Brenda Reuter, of 3714 Center St., Cedar Falls; paternal grandmother, Mrs. John Rand of 2304 Fairview Ave.; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Fanning of Yuma, Ariz.; and step-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Brustkern of 5280 LaPorte Road.

Leon Kelly Rand

Services for Leon Kelly Rand, 16, of 420 Dunham Place, will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Parrott and Wood Funeral Home, with burial at Elmwood Cemetery in Dike.

He died at Riverside, Calif., of injuries suffered in an auto accident Friday afternoon.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday.
