Marlis Irene Nielsen, 79, of Dike, died from Poly-cystic kidney disease, Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 1 at the Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Cedar Falls with Pastor Donald Feuerhak officiating. Burial was at Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or to the Dike Library.
Marlis Irene Toombs was born September 8, 1924 at South English. Marlis was the daughter of Katie (Stubbe) and Marcus Kole/Alvin Toombs. Marlis was united in marriage November 3, 1942 to Harlan C. Nielsen at the United Methodist Church in Dike. They spent their entire life in the Dike area farming. Marlis was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved to garden and enjoyed nature. Marlis was a kidney dialysis patient since September 2, 1992.
She is survived by her husband, Harlan; three daughters, Catherine and husband Merlyn Petersen of Dike, Claudia and husband Mike Squires of Greene, and Amy Anderson of Dike; a son, Glen and wife Kay Nielsen of Dike; 16 grandchildren, Paul, Dan, and Molly Petersen, Jennifer Targos, Marianne Nielsen, Karen and Becky Squires, Katy Neff, Michael Andersen, Suzanne Bennett, Chet, Michelle, and Carl Andersen, Angie Norton, Sara Joslin, and Maureen Stockdale.
Marlis is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren, Andrew, Rachael, and Aaron Petersen, Michael and Marcus Targos, Kathleen, Marlis, and Kennedy Neff, Josh and Miranda Andersen, Alex and Lillien Bennett, Elise Andersen, Katelyn VanWechel, Jenna Joslin, and Jacob Stockdale.
Survivors also include a sister, Marvel Hansen of Cedar Falls, a sister-in-law, Joyce Goetzinger of Dike; a brother-in-law, Bill and wife Beverly Nielsen of Dike.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law Kenny Andersen, and two brothers-in-law, George Hansen and Bud Goetzinger.
