Henry Abels Died Wednesday Night
A large group of friends attended the funeral services for Henry Abels which were held at the Dike Methodist Church last Saturday afternoon, May 13. Mr. Abels passed away at his home here in Dike Wednesday evening, May 10, following a lingering illness.
Rev. Robert Crum and former Dike pastor Rev. Harry Gleim of Boone were in charge of the services. Mrs. Jack Heritage who sang two solos was accompanied by Mrs. John Paige at the organ. Mrs. Hilmuth Mayer and Mrs. Richard Hamilton were in charge of the flowers. The ladies of the W.S.C.S. served coffee to the relatives and friends following the services.
Pall bearers were six nephews of the deceased: Jacob Abels of Holland, Lee DeNeui of Wellsburg, Harold Abels, Louis Abels, Lester Bloxham, and Walter Fonken of Grundy Center. Burial was at the Dike cemetery.
Relatives from a distance attending the services included those from Fairbanks, Rockford, Ill., and Davenport and many from the Grundy county area.
Henry Abels was born December 8, 1874, at Forreston, Ill. He moved to Colfax township in Grundy county with his parents as a young man. On September 25, 1912, he married Cora Wiese at the Colfax Center church. The couple farmed in South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota and in the Grundy county area, moving to the Grundy area in 1931. Later they moved to a farm near Dike where they lived until retiring to Dike 16 years ago.
Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, Edgar of Cedar Falls, John of Rockford, Ill., and Walter of Davenport; two daughters, Mrs. Jerry VanBrug of Cedar Falls and Mrs. Andrew Lamb of Davenport; three sisters, Mrs. Ralph Clock of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Mrs. Maggie Kinsinger and Miss Jennie Abels of Grundy Center; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
