Independence--Gene R. McBride, 78, of Independence, died Thursday, April 25, at West Village Care Center, Independence, of heart failure; survivors include his wife, Esther; three sons, Mark of Silver Springs, Md., Thomas of Davenport and Todd of Des Moines; a daughter, Lisa Hammitt of Mingo; a stepson, Robert Nelson of St. Paul, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Mary Louise Trost of Jordan, Minn.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a brother, Ivan of Chatam, Ill.; and two sisters, Genevieve Glenn-McCallum of Cedar Rapids and Beth Hall of Chahalis, Wash.; he was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances, in 1963; and a sister, Juanita Jans; services will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Independence, with burial at a later date; friends may call after 3 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home and Crematory, Independence, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. Masonic service, and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church; Mr. McBride was employed as a youth coordinator with the Iowa State University Extension Service in Buchanan and Worthy counties prior to his retirement in 1972; he was also a veteran of World War II.
