Rites Feb. 16th For Wm E. McBride

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Dike last Wednesday, Feb. 16, 1977 for William E. McBride, 80, of Dike. Mr. McBride passed away at the Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo of head injuries he suffered in a two-car accident east of Grundy Center last Saturday afternoon.

The Rev. James Hanke Jr. officiated at the 1:30 p.m. service. Organist Alice Mayer played "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross" as organ interludes during the services and selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Grandsons of Mr. McBride served as pallbearers. Ushers were Russell Hohenberger and John Mulder. Flower attendants were Mrs. John Volberding and Mrs. Ben Clapp. A flag from the Dike American Legion Post was presented to Mrs. McBride at the Elmwood Cemetery, Dike, during the committal services.

William E. McBride was born Aug. 20, 1896 in Orange County, Indiana, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. McBride. He was married to Alta Marlette on March 9, 1918 in Paoli, Indiana.

He was in service during World War I and after that moved to LaPorte City where he worked in the area as a farm laborer for approximately four years. Then they moved and lived in Wisconsin for a year and a half, then moved to Buckingham, where they rented various farms until 1931. They came to the Dike area from Buckingham and farmed north of Dike for three years. He started farming south of Dike in 1934 and lived there until he retired and moved and made their home at the west edge of Dike in 1967.

Mr. McBride was always a hard worker and interested in community organizations and activities.

He was a member of the Untied Methodist Church, Dike; World War I Barracks of Grundy county and a past member of the Dike American Legion Post No. 471, a past member of the Grundy County American Legion and a past Charter member of the Traer American Legion.

He was one of the original members of the Board of Directors of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital. He was a past member of the Dike Chamber of Commerce and a member of the school board of the Dike Community School district for a number of years.

He served as a Justice of the Peace in Grant township for 32 years, 5 months and 28 days. His time of service was from January 1940 until June 28, 1973. The Justice of the Court offices were abolished by the Unified Trial Court Act passed during the second session of the 64th General Assembly, effective July 1, 1973.

He was active in the Farm Bureau and served on the Grundy County Farm Service Board and was a past director of the Board.

Mr. and Mrs. McBride observed their 58th wedding anniversary in 1976.

He is survived by his wife, Alta; three sons, William E. McBride, Jr. of Chicago, Gene R. McBride of Independence, and Ivan L. McBride of Chatham, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Juanita) Jans of Harlan, Mrs. J. Gordon (Geneva) McCallum of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. James (Beth) Hall of Renton, Washington; one brother, Desco McBride of Chicago; one sister, Blanche Seybold of Oak Lawn, Ill.; several half brothers and half sisters; 24 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three grandchildren.
