Evelyn Gregory Services Held

Evelyn M. Gregory, of Dike, passed away Sunday, October 16, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes, having attained the age of 83 years and 26 days.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 19, at the United Methodist Church, Dike, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Thelma Subramanian officiating. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.

Pallbearers were Bob Minkel, Kenneth Strohbehn, Harris Jorgensen, Bob Gregory, Bill Madsen and Leonard Posekany.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Evelyn was born September 20, 1911, in Geneseo Township, Tama county, the daughter of William and Nettie (Meeker) Speer. She was raised in Geneseo Township and graduated from Geneseo Consolidated High School in 1930. Following her graduation with a Home Economics Diploma from Iowa State Teachers College in 1932, Evelyn taught school in the Jr. and Sr. High School at Ralston for five years.

On June 13, 1937, she was united in marriage to Clifford Martin Gregory of Ralston at the Geneseo Methodist Church in Buckingham. Evelyn and Clifford made their home in Ralston from June of 1937 until December 1, 1938, when they moved to Dike where Cliff was manager of the Farmers Coop Elevator and Soybean Processing Plant until his death in 1964.

To this union was born four children: Larry J., Louise H., Jean M. (Mrs. Jerry Speakar) and Paul Dean, deceased in 1955.

Evelyn was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Geneseo and Dike; was a member of the United Methodist Women since 1938 and held nearly every office in the organization as well as serving 10 years as a Waterloo District Officer; and was active in community and civic affairs, including the American Legion Auxiliary since 1938; served 10 years on the Grundy County cancer Board; many years on the Grundy County Homemaker Extension Board and the Grundy County Transit Board, 4-H, Dike Senior Citizens, and the Methodist Prayer Group.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; 1 son, Paul; her parents; 4 brothers, Ralph, Vernon, Roy and Myron Speer; and 2 sisters, Florence Stouffer and Noreen Ewing.

Survivors include 1 son, Larry J. Gregory and wife Solveig of Cedar Falls; 2 daughters, Louise N. Gregory of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Jean M. and husband Jerry Speakar of Cimarron, Kansas; 4 grandchildren, Kristen Gregory and Karen Dowell and Chad and Andy Speakar; and 1 great-grandson, Mitchell Dowell.

The Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
