Funeral, Obituary Of Joe Benson, 87

Funeral services for Joe Benson, 87, of 110 Monroe St., Dike, were held at the United Methodist Church, Dike, on Thursday morning, August 4th, with burial in the Dike Elmwood cemetery.

Mr. Benson passed away at the Schoitz Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on Monday, August 1, 1977.

The Rev. Charles Andersen officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Mrs. John Paige played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude music and accompanied vocalists, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Graves, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages."

Ushers were Albert Lauterbach and Russell Hohenberger. Mrs. Keith Klar and Mrs. George Roberts had charge of the floral arrangements. Roger DeWolf furnished a car for the family.

Pallbearers were Robert Bickett, Robert Beard, Vernon Cordes, John Paige, Gordon Sloth, D. E. Cathcart, Jack Heritage and Dean Snow.

Family members and friends were invited to share in fellowship at the Church following burial and a noon luncheon provided and served by members of the church and the Grant Rebekah Lodge.

Joseph Benson was born on Dec. 18, 1889, in Lithuania, the son of Frank and Mary Galnitus Benson. He came to the United States in 1907, having the distinction at that time to be able to speak four different languages. He spent his first year in America in the Chicago area with an uncle while working in a mine in Spring Valley, Ill.

J. Benson then moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where he worked three years in the railroad roundhouse. He later farmed in Marshall and Tama counties. He was united in marriage to Edith Read on Nov. 27, 1913. In 1932 they moved to the Dike area in Grundy county.

They retired from farming in 1951 and moved to their Dike home at 11 West Monroe St. Mrs. Benson passed away on March 18, 1973.

Joseph Benson is survived by one son, Willis of RR1, Reinbeck; one daughter, Mrs. Oscar (Bernice) Depping of rural Dike and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and a sister.

The Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements and held viewing at the Chapel on Tuesday evening.
