Funeral Services For Mrs. Maud Tobias

Funeral services were held this past Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 27, 1977 for Mrs. Maud Tobias, 84, of 208 W. Elder Street. Mrs. Tobias passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 24th at the Americana Health Care Center, Waterloo after being away from her home for one year and one day. She had suffered a stroke on Dec. 23, 1976 and was a patient at the Sartori Hospital until Jan. 7, 1977 when she was transferred to the Health Care Center. She attained the age of 84 years, 5 months and 11 days.

The 2 p.m. funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church, Dike, with Rev. James Hanke, Jr. officiating. Organist Mrs. John Paige played musical interludes of "How Great Thou Art" and "Rock of Ages" during the services as well as selected numbers for the prelude and postlude. Casketbearers were Peter Badje, Jack Heritage, Gordon Sloth, Gloy Mead, John Paige, and Guy Rich. Mrs. Lilas Schmidt and Mrs. Evelyn Dall served as flower attendants and John Mulder and Albert Lauterbach were ushers. Cars were provided for the family by D .E. Cathcart and Theo. Gerdes.

Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery, Dike. Friends and relatives were invited to return to the church to the fellowship hall following burial for coffee, refreshments and a time of fellowship.

The Dike Funeral Home were in charge of the arrangements. Public viewing was held at the Dike Chapel after 10:30 a.m. Monday until the body was taken to the church for viewing prior to the services. A memorial fund has been established.

Maud Jones was born July 13, 1893 at Waverly the daughter of George and Jennie Holbrook Jones. Her family lived in Waverly for a short time and then moved to New Hartford where Maud grew up. She worked in a drug store and a grocery store there. Later the family moved to Dike where Maud worked at the Kelsen General Store and then managed the NW Bell Telephone office and served as an operator.

On Dec. 15, 1920 here in Dike she was united in marriage to Elmer P. Tobias. After their marriage they continued to live in Dike for a time. They then moved to New Hartford where they stayed for five years and then to Independence for two years. They moved back to Dike to make their home here in the mid-1930's. Mr. Tobias passed away on Dec. 3, 1970.

Mrs. Maud Tobias was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Grant Rebekah Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, a charter member and first President of the Dike American Legion Auxiliary Unit and World War I Barracks Auxiliary.

She is survived by one daughter, Elma M. Kelley, Dike; one sister, Mrs. Jessie Deadrick of Cedar Falls; one grandson and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and three sisters.
