Larry G. Arends, 61

Larry Gene Arends, of Parkersburg, passed away Thursday, April 22, 1999 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He reached the age of 61 years, five months and one day.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg. Rev. Neal Ooms officiated. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike.

Pallbearers were Glenn Arends, Dave Hoyt, Dalon DeBoer, Lee Arends, John Spain and Melvin Bohlen. Honorary pallbearer was Clarence Aukes.

Larry was born the son of Marlyn and Gertrude Jungling Arends on November 21, 1937 in Grundy County, south of Fern. He graduated from the Dike High School in 1955.

On August 23, 1958 Larry was united in marriage with Dorla Hickey at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, rural Holland. They lived and farmed in Grundy County for 25 years. They were divorced in 1986.

Larry retired from farming in 1986 due to his illness. After his retirement, Larry enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to drive and show draft ponies and raising dogs.

Larry was a member of Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg.

Larry was preceded in death by his son Mark in 1978.

Larry is survived by his companion Marian DeBoer of Parkersburg; there are three children and 10 grandchildren: two daughters, Lori Ferris and son-in-law Don and their three children, Lindsey, Courtney and Katelyn of Central City, and Leah Johnson and son-in-law Curt and their three children, Tanner, Trevor and Trent of Dike; one son, Mike Arends and his fiance Sherri and their four children, Cassie, Dustin and Kohle Arends and Brett Jones of Cedar Falls; his parents, Marlyn and Gertrude Arends of Dike; two brothers, Duane and sister-in-law Holly of Parkersburg and Craig and sister-in-law Laurie of Dike; and four honorary grandchildren, Jeremy Mennen and Ryan, Sam and Logan DeBoer.

Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of the arrangements.
