Melvin Thurston Services Held

Melvin W. Thurston, of Cedar Falls, passed away Tuesday, September 21, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center in Cedar Falls of natural causes, having attained the age of 73 years, 11 months and 12 days.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 24, at the Community Church of Hudson at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Gerald A. Stevens officiating.

Pallbearers were Nicholas Soska, Jay Holmes, Darryl Koch, Reed Braden, Daryl Seyffer and Mark Miller.

Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery in Dike.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Falls health Care Center.

Melvin was born October 9, 1919, in Tama County the son of Arthur and Sarah (Davis) Thurston. He received his education at Tama County rural schools, and graduated from LeGrand High School in 1936. He also attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

On April 14, 1943, Melvin was united in marriage to Lois Konken in Spencer.

Melvin spent 35 years in teaching and administration, mostly in Hudson and North Winneshiek schools. He retired in 1982.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, George in 1990; and by three brothers, Glen, Jason, and Orville.

Survivors include his wife Lois; 2 grandchildren, Samuel and Joseph; one brother, Lawrence of Des Moines; and one daughter-in-law, JoAnn Binzen of Iowa City.
