Funeral Services February 28th For Mrs. Byrnes

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Dike last Saturday afternoon, Feb. 28, for Mrs. W. G. (Diana) Byrnes, 91.

Mrs. Byrnes passed away at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center on Tuesday night after being hospitalized since last November. She reached the age of 91 years, 10 months and 10 days.

The Rev. James F. Hanke, Jr. officiated at the 1:30 p.m. services. Mrs. John Paige, organist, played selected selections for the prelude and postlude and accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Graves who sang "Abide With Me" and "Beyond the Sunset." Ushers for the services were John Mulder and Byron Mulder. Mrs. George Roberts and Bobbie Wright were flower attendants. Pallbearers were Holger Dall, Jack Heritage, Marius Jensen, George Tonnesen, Laurence Murphy and John Paige. Friends and relatives were invited to return to the church for coffee and fellowship hour following the burial at the Elmwood Cemetery. The Dike Funeral Chapel, who were in charge of the arrangements, held public viewing at the chapel from Thursday evening until 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning when the casket was taken to the church for viewing prior to the services.

A memorial fund has been established.

Diana Byrnes was born April 14, 1884, the daughter of George and Mary Salt Harris at Reinbeck. She was a graduate of the Reinbeck high school and worked for the Reinbeck Courier for some time before she was married. On May 26, 1906 she was married to Wilbur G. Byrnes. They farmed in the Reinbeck-Dike area all their married life until retiring to Dike in 1960.

Survivors include four sons: Wendell of Grundy Center, Lawrence of Waterloo, Peter of Reinbeck, and Edwin of Devils Lake, North Dakota; three daughters, Mrs. Albert (Florence) Viken of Dike, Mrs. Harold (Dorothy) Groenwald of Lime Springs and Mrs. George (Faye) Benway Jr. of Littleton, Colo.; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Byrnes was preceded in death by her parents, husband who passed away in Nov. 1971, two sons, two grandsons and a brother.

Friends and relatives from a distance who were here for the services were Edwin Byrnes of Devils Lake, North Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Groenwald of Lime Springs; Mr. and Mrs. George Benway Jr. of Littleton, Colo.; Robert and Kevin Groenwald of Bear Lake, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. David Byrnes of Council Bluffs; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Viken of Rochester, Minn; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scott of Cedar Rapids, as well as area relatives from Gladbrook, Grundy Center, Waterloo, Reinbeck, Cedar Falls, Morrison and other locations in the area.
