Wilbur G. Byrnes, 86, Passes Away in W'loo

Wilbur G. Byrnes, 86, passed away at the Americana Nursing Home in Waterloo on Tuesday evening, Nov. 23. He had been at the nursing home since April 14, 1971.

Memorial services for Mr. Byrnes were held last Friday afternoon, Nov. 26, 1971, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Dike. Rev. Robert Hoover Jr. officiated.

Vocal music was sung by Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Graves who sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Abide With Me." Pall bearers were Paul Ehrig, Gerry Ehrig, Donald Ehrig, Walter Petersen of Gladbrook and Holger Dall and Laurence Murphy of Dike.

The flower attendants were Mrs. George Roberts and Mrs. Keith Klar. Ushers were Jack Heritage and Jake Alberts.

The body lied-in-state at the Dike Funeral Chapel from Wednesday evening until Friday noon. Dike Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.

Wilbur G. Byrnes was born July 27, 1885, in Washington Township of Grundy County, Iowa, the son of John L. and Emmaline Lloyd Byrnes. He married Diana Harris at the Methodist parsonage at Dike on May 26, 1906. The couple farmed in Reinbeck and the Dike area till moving to Dike in 1960.

A memorial fund has been established.

Mr. Byrnes is survived by his widow, Diana; three daughters, Mrs. Albert (Florence) Viken of Dike, formerly of Austin, Minn., Mrs. Harold (Dorothy) Groenwald of Lime Springs and Mrs. George (Faye) Benway Jr. of Littleton, Colorado; four sons, Peter Byrnes of Reinbeck, Edwin Byrnes of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Wendell Byrnes of Grundy center and Lawrence Byrnes; one brother, Frank Byrnes of Petersburg, North Dakota; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, one brother, two sisters and two grandsons.

Relatives and friends from a distance who were here for the memorial services were: Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Byrnes and Laurie of Devil's Lake, N.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Groenwald of Lime Springs; Mr. and Mrs. George A. Benway Jr. of Littleton, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. David Byrnes of Council Bluffs; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Viken of Rochester, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scott and Carmie Slaughter of Cedar Rapids; Miss Maureen O'Connor of Davenport; Wm. Sprole of Green Bay, Wisc.; as well as those from Gladbrook, Grundy Center, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Reinbeck, Morrison and other locations in the area.
