Long Time Resident, Charles McKinder, Passes Away

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 23 at the United Methodist Church for Charles McKinder, formerly of Dike. The Rev. James F. Hanke officiated at the 2:00 p.m. service. Mr. McKinder, 88, passed away at the Cedar Falls Health Center in Cedar Falls on September 20, 1979 at 1:30 p.m.

Mr. James Willms sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages." She was accompanied by Mrs. John Paige who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude. Casketbearers were Erik Christiansen, Duane Peters, Laurence Koch, John Paige, Robert Drum, and Ben Clapp. Ushers were John Mulder and Jack Heritage. Mrs. Jack Heritage and Mrs. Milford Stewart were in charge of floral arrangements. Gene Cathcart and Jim Biersner provided their cars for the family use. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. Relatives and friends were invited to return to the church for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments following the committal services.

Charles McKinder was born January 10, 1891 in Hiteman, Iowa. He attained the age of 88 years, 8 months, and 10 days. He was the son of George and Alice Canfield McKinder. On January 5, 1916, at Humeston, Iowa he was united in marriage to Hattie McCart. After their marriage they came to Dike where he barbered until 1927 when they moved to Waterloo. He barbered in Waterloo until 1940 when they moved to Dike. He continued to barber until 1961, when he retired. Shortly after retiring he started Charlie's Thrift Shop which he ran until 1978. During most of his life he was an artist painting mainly landscape pictures. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dike.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Hattie on July 26, 1974, and by several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by one son, Keith of Glendale, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Glenn (Veva) DeBower of RR2, Waverly; two sisters, Mrs. John (Ethel) Dolinich of Bridgeport, Conn., and Mrs. Jennie Bloemsma of Capistrano, Calif.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established. Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
