Russell Meewes Services Held

Russell Meewes, 90, of Dike, died Monday, July 14, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. Russell attained the age of 90 years, 3 months and 14 days.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 17, at the United Methodist Church in Dike. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery. The Rev. Rick Johnson officiated.

Pallbearers were Larry Erpelding, Bob Christensen, Gary Andersen, Dennis Koch, John McCarter and Jack Mommer.

A memorial fund has been established.

Russell was born March 20, 1907, in Reinbeck, the son of George and Mary Storjohann Meewes. Russell graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1926. He married Lucille Wickens August 29, 1928, in Gruver, Iowa.

Russell farmed his entire life around the Dike area. He and Lucille retired and moved to Dike in 1978.

Russell was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dike, he was past master of the Dike Masonic Lodge, a past old Grand of the Oddfellows of Dike, past patron of the New Hartford Eastern Star and a longtime county supervisor.

Preceding Russell in death were his parents; a daughter, Patricia Jean Miller; 2 sisters, Edna Gruis and Mildred Rudy; and a brother, Dale Meewes.

Russell is survived by his wife Lucille of Dike; 2 sons, Lester and his wife Norma Meewes of Cedar Rapids and Ralph and his wife Jeanne Meewes of Melbourne, Florida; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Leo and Erna Meewes of Mesa, Arizona, Clarence and Zatha Meewes of Waterloo and Warren and Betty Meewes of Cedar Falls; 3 sisters, Esther Lauterbach of Waterloo, Marion Squires of Cedar Falls and Margaret and her husband Harley Davis of Mesa, Arizona.

The Dike Funeral Chapel in Dike was in charge of the arrangements.
