Rites Held For S. Naomi Roberts

Sylvia Naomi Roberts, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Dike, died Tuesday, January 5, 1999, at the Western Home in Cedar Falls of natural causes. She attained the age of 96 years, three months and 14 days.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 9, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Dike. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. Pastor James Hanke officiated.

Pallbearers were Michael Hernandez, Nicholas Hernandez, Allan Butler, Jeffrey Butler, Gregory Roberts, Michael Jans, Kenneth Jans and David Eilers.

Memorials may be directed to the Dike United Methodist Church.

Naomi was born on September 21, 1902, in Conrad the daughter of Charles R. and Flora Mabel (Daggett) Stubbs. She graduated from Conrad High School in 1921 and from Cornell College in 1925. Naomi taught school in Dike and in Akron before she married Fred D. Roberts on May 5, 1928 in Hampton. In 1950 Fred passed away and Naomi took over his mail route for one year and then went back to teaching. She taught in Albion for one semester and then in Dike for 17 years, teaching Home Economics and then sixth grade. She retired in 1969.

Naomi was a member of the Dike United Methodist Church, the Rebekah Lodge, a charter member of the Grundy County Historical Museum Board, the Dike Antique Club and helped to organize the Dike Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; a son, George; a daughter, Alice Hernanez; her parents; and two brothers, Donald and John Stubbs.

Survivors include her three daughters, Mary Jans of Reinbeck, Helen and her husband Jeff Hoffer of Waterloo and Carol and her husband Jerry Butler of Waterloo; a daughter-in-law, Doris Roberts of Dike; a son-in-law, John Hernandez of Evansdale; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a brother Harlan and his wife Loretta Stubbs of Kalona.

The Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
