Ben Clapp, 81

Ben Clapp, 81, of Dike, passed away of cancer on June 26 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center under the care of the Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services were June 30 at the Dike United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery. Military graveside services were conducted by the Dike American Legion Post #471. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that memorials be sent to the Cedar Valley Hospice of the Dike Library.

Ben was born November 28, 1921, in Butler County, the son of Joe and Bertha (Viet) Clapp. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Marx on October 25, 1946. Ben served with the United States Navy Seabees in the Pacific theater during WWII from 1943-46. He was a self-employed electrician for many years and then was employed at the University of Northern Iowa physical plant, retiring in 1984. A life long resident of Dike, he was a past commander and 50 year member of American Legion Post #471, he served on the Dike Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Dike United Methodist Church. Ben had a passion for fishing and enjoyed his retirement years fishing with his wife Kathryn and many friends.

Ben is survived by his two sons, Kenneth Clapp and his wife Rossi of Grand Rapids, MI, and James Clapp and his wife Shirley of Arlington; four grandchildren; a brother, Antko Clapp and his wife Lola of Cedar Falls; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Clapp of Dike.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and two brothers, Heiko and Joe Clapp, Jr.
