Mrs. Hiram Shaw Passes Away
Beloved Life Goes To Its Reward Monday Morning
Mrs. Hiram Shaw passed away between the hours of ten and eleven Monday forenoon. Mrs. Shaw was seventy-nine years old and her death was the result of senility. This condition manifested itself in aggravated form two weeks ago when Mrs. Shaw was taken to her bed from which attending physicians knew at the beginning that she could not arise again. Like the leaf in the autumn time she had come to the end of life's allotted span and her death was but following out the unchangeable plan of nature. Having been the mother of nine children and the beloved wife of a devoted husband for fifty-nine years Mrs. Shaw gave and enjoyed earthly blessings that few of us are permitted to share.
Funeral services conducted by Rev. L. P. Krome were held at the Presbyterian church in this city yesterday afternoon. The many and beautiful floral offerings from relatives and friends revealed in a measure the kindly sentiments of those who tendered them.
Obituary
Mrs. Laura S. Shaw, daughter of Horace & Susan Way, was born at Sutton, Vermont, July 30, 1833. Her childhood was spent at the place of her birth, and the period of her youth in New Hampshire. She was joined in marriage to Hiram Shaw at Concord, N.H., in the year 1853. She came west to Madison, Wisconsin, in 1856. They removed to Omaha, Neb., and thence to Ohio, later to Illinois, coming to Grundy Center in March 1877, where she has since resided.
Mrs. Shaw was the mother of nine children, five of whom died in infancy, and four of whom are still living, Horace N. of Winterset, Iowa; Harry H., of Greely, Colo.; Mrs. L. E. Wilcox of St. Louis, Mo.; and Mrs. F. F. Montgomery of Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw would soon have rounded out a period of happy married life covering 59 years. Many will remember their Golden wedding anniversary, which was celebrated at the church almost nine years ago.
Mrs. Shaw has been a Christian from the early years of her life, and through a long period has continued a consistent and faithful member of the church, uniting with the Congregational church in Omaha, Neb., upon their removal to that city in the late fifties. She was a member also of the Congregational church of Grundy Center, and upon the discontinuance of that organization, became a member of the Presbyterian church February 21st, 1889. She has always manifested a deep interest in her church and its welfare, revealing herself to be a most sincere and faithful follower of her Lord.
She was greatly beloved by a wide circle of friends, and had won the love and esteem of the whole community of which she has been a resident for so many years. She has lived to a ripe age, and her life has been helpful and serviceable not only to her immediate family, who will miss her greatly, but to many others also who have come in touch with her beautiful life.
