He Hanged Himself

Cecil Mason Ended His Life About 5 o'clock This Morning

Found Hanged To Hayrack

Had Been In Poor Health for a Long Time and His Mind Was Affected

Cecil Mason is dead. He ended his life this (Thursday) morning at break of day by hanging himself with a chain to the standard of a hay rack in the field about 40 rods from the house.

He arose early in the morning and went out to do chores, but was soon missed by members of the family and search was at once made with the above results. His brother-in-law, Fred Denio, and Geo. Neihuis finding him. Mr. Mason had not been up more than half an hour when he was taken down from the wagon dead.

He had been in poor health for some time and his mind had become affected. The family has kept close watch of him to see that he did himself no harm as it was feared he would attempt his life.

The affair is very sad and the family has the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the home, conducted by Rev. F. M. Archer of Cedar Rapids.

Cecil D. Mason

Cecil D. Mason was born in Erie county, New York, May 22, 1846, and died October 13, 1904. He was married to Helen A. Denio September 21, 1880.

He was converted at the age of eleven and united with the Baptist church at Strykersville, N.Y.

He removed with his parents to Kossuth County, Iowa, in 1859. He removed to Black Hawk county, in March 1863. After residing there six years he came to Grundy county where he lived until his death. He lived on the same farm since 1877.

At the organization of the First Baptist church of Algona, Iowa, he was the youngest member being only thirteen years old. He has been a faithful member of the Baptist church of Grundy Center since coming to this county.

He leaves besides his faithful wife, a son, Howard, aged 21, two brothers and five sisters, Mrs. S. M. Buttrick of Hanover, Mass.; Mrs. C. P. Hunt, Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. G. W. Thorndike, Mrs. H. E. Little and F. R. Mason of Grundy Center; Mrs. O. C. Bly, Niagara Falls, N. Y., and C. I. Mason, Lake Park, Iowa.
