Last Rites Held For Former Superintendent

Requiem mass for Alfred F. Von Tersch, 80, of Marshalltown were held last week Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church there. Graveside services were held Monday afternoon at Harlan, Iowa Catholic cemetery.

Mr. Von Tersch died on December 26 in Kansas City, Mo., while visiting his sister, of an apparent heart attack.

He was born May 14, 1894 in Harlan, the son of Joseph and Catherine Bauer Von Tersch, and married June 29, 1921, in Hayti, S.D., to Martha Emerson. He was a 1925 graduate of South Dakota State University with a B.S. degree, and in 1937 earned his master's degree at Iowa State University, Ames.

Before his retirement Mr. Von Tersch was a high school teacher and a high school superintendent, and also was employed by the Iowa Department of Social Welfare. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion as well as St. Mary's Catholic Church at Marshalltown.

Survivors include three sons: Alfred J., Milan, Ill., Dr. Wayne Von Tersch, Okemos, Mich., and Col. George Von Tersch, Velleview, Nebr; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Elizabeth) Berglund, Largo, Fla.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Tim MacDonald of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Elizabeth Maddex, California; a brother, Frank Von Tersch of Defiance; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife.

Mr. Von Tersch was a former school superintendent here at one time during 1920 and he was also here for a time previous to serving in World War I. While Mr. Von Tersch was here he began girls' basketball, about 1916.
