Calvin Haats, 66
Calvin John Haats, 66, of Clive, died at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, from cancer, at the Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines. He reached the age of 66 years, 5 months, and 22 days.
Calvin was born on April 6, 1933, in Butler County, Aplington, the son of Edward and Kathryn Eilders Haats. He graduated from the Aplington Community School in 1951. Calvin served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954, and served a tour of duty in Korea during the Korean War.
On Dec. 2, 1955, Calvin was united in marriage with Marlys LeAnn Ross at the First Reformed Church in Aplington. They made their home in the Wellsburg and Cedar Falls areas before moving to their present home in Clive. Calvin retired from the Contract Transportation Company in April of 1995. One of Calvin's favorite pastimes was golfing and he had a special interest in reading books and articles about World War II.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Theodore and Albert Haats.
Survivors include his wife, Marlys of Clive; one son, Thomas of Bend, OR; one daughter, Karla Haats of Clive; four sisters, Gertrude Kramer of Lake View, Catherine Elliott of Aplington, Edith (Mrs. Fred) TerHark of Aplington, and Elaine (Mrs. Justin) Koenen of Waterloo, and two brothers, Edward and wife Sheryl Haats of Aplington, and Kenneth and wife Pat Haats of Waterloo.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 1, at the First Reformed Church in Aplington with Rev. Gary Hegstad officiating. Interment was at Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, with full military rites presented by Aplington Amvets Post 102. Casketbearers were Wayne Diekman, Marvin Eilderts, Edward Lawson, Donald Heikens, Kendall Koenen, and Raymond Huisman.
Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements.
