John Elwood Cone, 85

John Elwood Cone, of Grundy Center, passed away on Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center of natural causes. He attained the age of 85 years, seven months and 23 days.

Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery both in Grundy Center with military flag presentation by the Grundy Center American Legion Post #349. Pastor Dan Graham will officiate the service. Friends may call at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established at the Grundy County Hospice.

Elwood was born on April 6, 1914, in Grundy Center the son of John A. and Eda (Watkins) Cone. He graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1932.

On Oct. 8, 1935, he was united in marriage to Opal Lutz in Wellsburg. Elwood was a manager and meat cutter in various grocery stores in Grundy Center. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was also a member of the Grundy Center American Legion Post #349.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mrs. Glen "Isabel" Cone of Grundy Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal; his parents; three brothers, Floyd, Glen and William; and a sister, Gladys Brown.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center is in charge of the arrangements.
