Gilbert Schantz
Gilbert W. Schantz, 68, of 1851 Melrose Ave., the former superintendent of Wellsburg public schools, died this morning at Mercy Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Friends may call at the George L. Gay Funeral Home beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Schantz was born Feb. 27, 1911, in Wayland, a son of Christian and Margaret Rich Schantz. He married Annabel Cundy on Aug. 6, 1939, at Cedar Falls.
He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the University of Iowa.
He taught at Sharon Center, Cedar Falls, Wayland and Wyman, and was superintendent of schools at Wellsburg before returning to Iowa City. He taught in the Iowa City schools from 1963-1974.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the National Education Association, the Alumni Association, American Legion and the Iowa City Evening Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mark of Iowa City and Robert of Beaver Dam, Wis.; a daughter, Mary Henson of San Diego, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Two brothers died earlier.

G. W. Schantz, Former School Supt., Is Dead
Gilbert W. Schantz, 68, of Iowa City, passed away Monday, September 17 at University hospital there. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the 1st Methodist Church in Iowa City.
The Schantz family were formerly residents at Wellsburg. Mr. Schantz was School Superintendent at the Wellsburg Community High School from 1956 to 1963. After leaving Wellsburg the Schantz family moved to Iowa City.
Those who survive are his wife, Ann, three children, Mark of Des Moines, Mary of California, and Robert of South Bend, Indiana.
Attending the funeral services from here were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Heikens, Harris Peters, John Olthoff, Benjamin Hook, Don Purvis, Darrell Breneman, and Fred Gross.
