Abraham E. Wilts

Funeral services were held Monday, June 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ackley Christian Reformed Church for Abraham E. Wilts, who passed away June 3. Rev. Paul Mann officiated at the services. Linda Flack was organist and soloist was Richard Schafer of Wellsburg. Ushers were Dennis Miller and Lowell Dohlmann. Serving as pallbearers were Keith Huisman, Harris Reiter, Gregory Geerdes, Don Geerdes, Wesley Harms and Bert Geerdes. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. The Brandt-Fritz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Abraham (Abe) Edward Wilts was born November 15, 1909 in Hardin County, north of Cleves, the 2nd child of John and Janna (Jaspers) Wilts. At a young age he moved with his parents to a farm east of Steamboat Rock. Wilts served in the United States Army from 1942-1945. While in the army he served in Africa as a truck driver.

On May 18, 1945, he was united in marriage to Verna G. Geerdes at the home of her parents, Geerd and Antjie Geerdes in Steamboat Rock. They farmed on the family farm east of Steamboat Rock until 1964 when they moved to Ackley. He had been employed at the Ackley canning factory and had retired from United Hydraulics in Hampton. He also enjoyed other places of employment during his lifetime, including Carstens and Pies Trucking.

Mr. Wilts was a member of the Ackley Christian Reformed Church.

He is survived by his wife, Verna; two daughters, Mrs. James (Viola) Wagner and Mrs. Merlin (Ann) Benning, both of Ackley; two sons, John E. of Cedar Rapids and Robert A. of Cleves; seven grandchildren, John, Melladee and Justin Reints, Brent and Stephanie Benning, David And Carrie Wagner; one sister, Mrs. Carl (Ordie) Reiter of Wellsburg and one brother, Otto J. Wilts of Shell Rock. He is also survived by two sons-in-law and a daughter-in-law.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Mrs. Roy (Fannie) Luiken.
