Edward L. Smith, 81

Edward L. Smith, 81, of Wellsburg, died September 18 at the VA Central Health Care System in Des Moines.

Funeral services were September 21 at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Paul C. Nelson officiating. Burial followed at Hazel Green Cemetery, rural Ackley. A military service was provided by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and the Wellsburg American Legion Post No. 213. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown.

Edward was born May 2, 1920 in Woodburn, the son of Claude and Maude (Ewoldsen) Smith. He attended rural school near Woodburn and then graduated from Woodburn High School. Edward served in the United States Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945. On December 15, 1945, Edward was united in marriage to Lillian "Irene" Moore at Fort Scott, KS.

They farmed near Woodburn for six years and then moved to Grundy County. Edward worked as a hired hand near Ackley for five years and they lived north of Wellsburg. In 1957 he started working at the Wellsburg Creamery hauling milk. From 1969 to 1972, he and his wife Irene owned and operated a cafe at the Skelly Gas Station in Wellsburg. For the last 6 1/2 years, Edward was a resident at the Iowa Veterans' Home in Marshalltown. Edward was a member of the American Legion in Woodburn and also a member of the AMVETS in Wellsburg. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda Forehand of Grundy Center; two brothers Ralph (Maxine) Smith of Des Moines and Wilbert (Rosalie) Smith of Nixa, MO; sister, Louise (Merrill) Fleener of Sunnyvale, CA; sister-in-law, Laura Smith of Woodburn; three grandchildren, Valerie (Kendall) Rhoads and Dawn (Jim) Hippen, of Aplington and Brian (Janell) Forehand of Parkersburg; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Irene in 1989; his parents; one great-grandson, Brandon Forehand; one brother, Ernest Smith; one sister, Maxine Carson; and one brother-in-law, Clifford Carson.
