Nola Kay (Flessner) Meester, 78, a former Grundy County resident, passed away peacefully at her home in Tightwad, Missouri on October 26th, 2018.

Nola, also known as Kayzie, was born November 3rd, 1939 to Thomas John and Neola (Haack) Flessner. She was proud to have grown up in the big town of Wellsburg, Iowa. Nola attended school in Wellsburg, graduating in 1957. She then went on to attend college at the University of Iowa where she was excited to have accomplished a hole-in-one in golf during her attendance. Being a Hawkeye was in her blood, and she was proud to be one.

In 1959, she was wed to Eugene Meester of Grundy Center, Iowa. They were blessed with two beautiful children, Dale and Dawn. Nola was Eugene’s right hand man on their farm for many years, and took that role very seriously. She always enjoyed the farm life and what it had to offer her, but when her granddaughter enrolled in Elementary School she got herself a job in town working for the Grundy Center school system in the kitchen as the “lunch card lady”. Nola retired back to her farm in her late 60’s, but she made a lasting impression from her years working for the school.

Nola was well known for being the lady who was always waving at travelers while mowing her yard, or enjoying a nice evening on her porch off Highway 14. She herself never knew a stranger, and enjoyed company from friends and family. Nola sang in the choir and was an active member at First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Nola Kay found joy in many things in her life, most of them being the simple pleasures of life that others take for granted. She could most often be found casting a line and catching fish at the “Meester sandpit”, golfing at the Wellsburg golf course, and going on local and outside tractor rides with her favorite tractor buddy, Andrew Sternhagen. In 2016, Nola relocated to Tightwad, Missouri with her daughter and son-in-law to be closer to her granddaughter, Michelle, and her little family. In Missouri, Nola enjoyed going to Cody and Michelle’s farm where she would sit and watch their livestock, play with puppies, and most importantly have slumber parties with her great-grandchildren. Nola continued her love of fishing, golfing, mowing, road trips with her daughter, family get-togethers with her children, and rooting for her favorite sports team - the Hawkeyes of course. Nola took her morning coffee on her front porch watching birds, squirrels, and chipmunks. In the evenings you could find Nola on her back deck with her dogs and a cold one. Although she enjoyed many things throughout her life, family was always her number one and it showed in everything she did.

Nola Kay was a faith driven, Christian woman that trusted in God’s plan for her. There were many obstacles in Nola’s life that she overcame, and she was an admirable person to those around her. Her strength was beyond measure, and she kept a smile on all of the time. Nola made the world a little more interesting (and funny) for everyone who knew her. She could teach you how to be patient, selfless, caring, kind, and could also make you laugh with her infinite words of wisdom. Those of us who have had the pleasure of having Nola in our lives are better because of her.

Nola is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 59 years, brother Tom “Buck” and wife Sally. Survived by her children: Dale (Lisa) of Grundy Center, Iowa, and Dawn (Steve) Bonk of Tightwad, Missouri. Grandchildren: Michelle (Cody) Nichols of Wheatland, Missouri. Nick and Cheslea Bonk of Elk River, MN. Great-grandchildren: Adyson, Madalyn, and Thatcher Nichols. Nola also left behind several nieces, nephews, and their families.

There will be a celebration of life memorial for Nola Kay Meester held at the First Presbyterian Church, 801 Eighth Street, Grundy Center, IA on November 10th, 2018 at 1:00-3:00 p.m. Bring your favorite stories and cherished memories to share with family and friends while we all have coffee and cookies.
