Charlie Sword, 90

Charlie Sword, 90, formerly of Union, died Tuesday, March 26, 1996, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Services were held Saturday, March 30 at the Ivester Church of the Brethren, rural Grundy Center, with Rev. Marlene Neher officiating.

Interment was in the Sheller Cemetery, rural Grundy Center. Biersborn Funeral Home of Union handled arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.

Charlie Sword was born March 13, 1906 in Manchester, Kansas to Melvin and Lanah Wolf Sword. He was raised and educated in Abilene, Kansas.

He married Ruth VanDyke March 21, 1934, in Sabetha, Kansas. A farmer and self-employed carpenter, he worked on farms in Kansas and Iowa. He lived in Conrad until 1954, moving to Union in 1972. He moved to the Presbyterian Village, Ackley, in 1993.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son; three sisters; and five brothers.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Nona Steinbrink of Smithville, Missouri; a son, Duane, of Columbus, Indiana; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
