Melvin E. Pence Sr.
Newton, Ia.--Melvin E. Pence Sr., 68, of Newton died of cancer Friday at home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home here. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Sheller Cemetery in Grundy County.
Mr. Pence was born in Liberty, Ill., and had lived in Waterloo, Whitten and Ivester before moving to Newton in 1984. He was a retired farmer and salesman. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Ivester Church of the Brethren, Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars and Newton Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Dora; five sons, Levi of Newton, Melvin Jr. of Lenox, David of Earlville, Alex of Nevada and George of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Howard of Conrad; and 10 grandchildren.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Jasper County.
