Rites Held For Russell Thoren

Russell A. Thoren of Cresco, and formerly of Grundy Center, passed away at his home in Cresco on Thursday, May 26th, after a lengthy illness. He had reached the age of 64 years.

Funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center on Saturday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Edgar Kolfenbach officiating.

Organist was Mrs. Rita Fisher. Ushers were Virgil Abels and Wallace Norman.

Casket bearers were Richard A. Thoren, Donald L. Thoren, Steven A. Thoren, Michael J. Thoren, John Streets Sr., and John Streets Jr.

Interment was held in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Russell A. Thoren was born December 30, 1923, in Grundy Center, the son of Abram and Anna Bleeker Thoren. He grew up in Grundy Center and graduated from the Grundy Center high school in 1943.

On October 20, 1945, he and Betty A. Lolwing were united in marriage. After their marriage, they lived in Grundy Center until 1958, and moved to Boone. From 1960 to 1966, they lived in Grinnell, moving to Vinton where they lived until 1978, when they moved and made their home in Lake View, AK. In October of 1987, they moved and lived in Cresco.

During most of his life, he was a territory sales manager for various feed companies.

He was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and seven brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Cresco; four sons, Richard A. of Kansas City, MO, Donald L., of Crestwood, KY, Steven A., of Vinton, and Michael J. of Vinton; one daughter, Mrs. John (Beverly) Streets, Decorah; two brothers, Lee and LeRoy Thoren of Grundy Center; three sisters, Tillie Buchan, Waterloo, Dorothy Weigand, Iowa City, and Margaret Bowers of Grundy Center; and five grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Rosary was held at 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
