Backing Auto Kills 20-Month-Old Valinda Jaspers

Valinda Ann Jaspers, 20-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alle Jaspers of near Steamboat Rock, was killed Friday evening when backed over by the right rear wheel of the family car in their farm drive.

Her father was backing from the garage area about 8:45 p.m. to go to Wellsburg for a church league softball game and did not know the girl was nearby until he felt the bump when striking her. The girl was rushed to the Medical Clinic in Ackley, and when no doctor could be located, was taken to Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls, where she was dead upon arrival.

The family lives about four miles northeast of Steamboat Rock.

Funeral services for Valinda Ann Jaspers were held Monday from the Eastfriesland Presbyterian Church near Wellsburg.

Rev. David Dupee officiated with Sally Oelmann, Jane Oelmann and Mrs. Richard Roelfs providing the vocal music. Mrs. Virgil Heetland was organist and Darla and Denise Bleeker were in charge of the flowers.

Casket bearers were Scott Siefken, Jason Lindaman, Edwin Kruse and Jerry Lindaman, with interment in the church cemetery. Doyen Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Valinda Ann Jaspers was born August 16, 1967 in the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center to Alle and Virginia Lindaman Jaspers. She was preceded in death by an infant sister and her maternal grandfather, Harley B. Lindaman.

Survivors include her parents; one brother, Allen Vance; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Harley Lindaman of Wellsburg; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Okko Jaspers of Steamboat Rock; and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Ben H. Lindaman of Wellsburg.
