Family Mourns Passing Of Mrs. Akkerman

Mrs. Martha Akkerman passed away Wednesday morning, July 7, 1982 at the Presbyterian Home in Ackley due to complications of advanced age. She reached the age of 93 years, nine months and seven days.

Funeral services for Mrs. Akkerman were held on Friday, July 9, 1982 at 1:30 p.m. at the Faith Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley. The Rev. Jerry VanCurler officiated. Mrs. Marvin J. Richtsmeier and Mrs. Gordon Fritz sang two duet numbers. Mrs. Virgil Heetland was organist. Mrs. Bernard Buskohl and Johanna VanLoh were flower attendants. Pall bearers were Jake B. Lindaman, Harold Lindaman, Arnold Lindaman, Paul Klingenborg, Bernard Buskohl, and Lloyd Lindaman.

Martha was born on a farm in Colfax Township, northeast of Wellsburg, on September 30, 1888, the daughter of Jacob and Katy (Greenfield) Lindaman. When she was 11 years old, the family moved to a farm in German Township, northwest of Wellsburg. She received her education in the rural school in the area. On March 7, 1912, she was united in marriage to Henry Akkerman. Following their marriage they lived on a farm in German Township for six years. On October 3, 1914, a son Henry Akkerman, Jr. was born. Her husband passed away on October 31, 1918 and she remained a widow for 64 years. In 1928 she purchased a farm and resided there until 1977, at which time she became a resident of the Presbyterian Home in Ackley.

Mrs. Akkerman was a life-long member of the East Friesland Presbyterian Church of Ackley.

Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband; a grandson, Dennis Ray Akkerman; five sisters, Katy Lindaman, Annie Buskohl, Kate VanLoh, Lena VanLoh, and Nannie Klingenborg; five brothers, Ben , Henry J., William, Hei, and John J. Lindaman.

Those left to mourn her passing are: her son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Marie Akkerman of Wellsburg; two grandchildren, Larry Akkerman of Wellsburg and (Joyce) Mrs. Wayne Blythe of Wellsburg; three great-grandchildren, Dustin and Vaughn Blythe and Melissa Ann Akkerman, all of Wellsburg; one brother, Jake J. Lindaman of Ackley; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Cornelia Lindaman of Wellsburg; and many other relatives and friends.

Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
