Henry Akkerman Services Held

Henry "Heinie" Akkerman, of Wellsburg passed away on Saturday, September 27, at the Ackley Presbyterian Village in Ackley of natural causes, having attained the age of 82 years, 11 months and 24 days.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 1, at 10 a.m. at the Faith Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley. Pastor Tim Diehl officiated the service. Burial followed in the East Friesland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, rural Ackley.

Pallbearers were George Sietsema, Warren Lindaman, Paul Klingenborg, Glen Arends, Donald Lindaman and Bernard Buskohl. Honorary pallbearers were Dustin and Vaughn Blythe, Tim Diamond, Melissa Akkerman, Carmen Garzouzie, Treye Blythe, and Amy Blythe.

A memorial fund has been established.

Henry was born on October 3, 1914, in rural Wellsburg the son of Henry and Martha (Lindaman) Akkerman. He received his education in German Township. At the age of four his father passed away and he and his mother moved to the Lindaman farm where they lived with his grandmother and family. In 1928, he moved to the farm where he continued to live until 1980.

He was united in marriage to Marie Smit on November 30, 1939, in rural Holland. They operated a trucking business and farmed in the Wellsburg area. After retiring from farming they operated an antique business. In 1980, they moved to Wellsburg and in April of 1997, he moved to the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Henry was a member of the Faith Presbyterian Church, served as a director on the Grundy County REC board for 18 years, and served on the church board.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Dennis on July 25, 1941, and his parents.

Survivors include his wife Marie of Wellsburg; son, Larry Akkerman and wife Kathie of Wellsburg; daughter, Joyce Blythe and husband Wayne of Wellsburg; 3 grandchildren, Dustin Blythe of Riceville, Vaughn Blythe and wife Amy of Clarksville and Melissa Akkerman of Wellsburg; 1 step-grandson, Tim Diamond of Wellsburg; 1 great-grandson, Treye Blythe of Riceville; and 1 sister-in-law, Lois Peters of Grundy Center.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
