Janice Faye Yackey (nee Engelkes) was surrounded by her family as she went home to be with the Lord on November 11, 2017.
Janice was born on June 27, 1947 in Marshalltown, IA to Bernard and Marian (nee Smit) Engelkes. She grew up on the farm in rural Holland, IA and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1965. She then attended Central College in Pella, IA and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.
After graduation, she moved to Menomonee Falls, WI where she started her career teaching 2nd grade at Ben Franklin Elementary School. During her 16 years as a teacher, she also briefly taught at Shady Lane Elementary School before retiring.
In 1970, Janice stood up in her close friend Mary’s wedding where she met Frank. Frank and Jan were married on July 8, 1972. They have resided in Sussex, WI since 1975.
After they were married, Frank and Jan started attending Falls Presbyterian Church. Over the years, Jan was involved in many activities which included teaching Sunday School, attending Bible Study, and coordinating Vacation Bible School.
Jan really enjoyed being with children and teaching them. When she retired from teaching she stayed home with her two daughters and was very involved in their lives. She was an active Girl Scout Leader for both the girls’ troops. Later, Jan started working for Computertots and eventually owned her own Computertots franchise.
Jan loved reading books, watching sports, doing crossword puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren.
This year Jan celebrated her 70th birthday and 45th wedding anniversary with many family and friends.
Jan is survived by her husband, Frank. Her children Rachel (Andrew) Harcum and Laura (Robbie) Donehoo. Grandchildren Lorelai, Rhett, and Rowan Harcum. Siblings Beth (Sid) Slifer, Gene (special friend Judy) Engelkes, and Darwin (Melanie) Engelkes. By nieces and nephews. By members of the Brill family. And by her dear friend, Jean Koss. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 18th from 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM at Falls Church, W156 N7356 Pilgrim Rd., Menomonee Falls, WI. Funeral service will follow at 12 PM. A luncheon will follow after the service. Private interment at Sunnyside Cemetery in Lannon, WI.
