Laurence I. Neessen

Waterloo--Laurence I. "Larry" Neessen, 89, of Waterloo, died Monday, Dec. 18, at his home.

He was born July 21, 1917, in Wellsburg, son of Heiko and Norma Johnson Neessen. He married Maureen Elizabeth Valentine May 9, 1943, in Lake Worth, Fla.

He graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1936. Mr. Neessen was a supervisor in the canning department at Rath Packing for 25 years. He then worked in the parts department at John Deere for 17 years.

He also served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survived by: his wife; a son, Gary Neessen of Waterloo; four daughters, Carol (Jim) Brainerd of Bettendorf, Vicki (Mike) Tjepkes of Buffalo, Minn., and Cynthia Neessen and Debra Ammiano, both of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Christine, Kelly, Amber, Kim, Ryan, Misty and Tory; seven great-grandchildren, Wesley, Grayson, Foxx, Finn, Ella, Alexa and Nathan; and three sisters, Laverne Johnson and Helen (Neil) McCaffery, both of Waterloo, and Merna "Joyce" Hicks of Greenville, Mich.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Donald LeRoy Neessen; a sister, Carol Elaine Neessen; and a sister in infancy.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Public visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials: may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
