Funeral Sunday For Thomas C. Hoekstra

Funeral services for Thomas C. Hoekstra, were held on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 9, at 3:00 p.m. at the Doyen Funeral Home. Rev. Donald E. Kehrle was officiating clergyman. Gordon Daleske was the soloist with Mrs. Lee Pieters as accompanist. Pall bearers were Stanley Walton, Donald Kriegel, Leonard Untiedt, Ray Snittjer, Herman Snittjer and Tim Hoekstra. Interment was made in the Steamboat Rock cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Wellsburg Amvets Post 91 and American Legion Post 213.

Mr. Hoekstra passed away on Thursday morning, Dec. 6 at the Eldora Custodial Home in Eldora due to an apparent heart attack. He had resided at the Home for the past three months. He reached the age of 56 years and 4 days.

He was born on a farm in Shiloh township, north of Wellsburg on Dec. 2, 1917, the son of Benjamin and Louise (Akkerman) Hoekstra. He attended the rural school in the area and graduated from the Wellsburg high school in 1936. In 1945 he was united in marriage to Wanda Huisman at Northwood. Following their marriage they made their home in Wellsburg. They lived in South Dakota for one year and for two years in Las Vegas, Nevada where Tom was engaged in construction work. In July of 1964 they moved to Gladbrook.

He was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the National Guard and being called to active duty on Feb. 10, 1941. During the war he served in the European, African and Middle Eastern campaigns.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those who survive are his wife, Mrs. Wanda Hoekstra of Grundy Center; daughters: Mrs. Jackie Lauer of Rochester, Minn., Miss Patsy Hoekstra of Pella, Mrs. Bonnie Eggers of Pella; 2 grandsons: Charlie and Bryan Lauer; one granddaughter, Sarah Jane Eggers; two brothers, Neal Hoekstra of Wickenburg, Arizona and Wendell Hoekstra of Steamboat Rock; and many other relatives and friends.
