Rites Held For Jacob J. Peters
Jacob J. Peters was born January 28, 1909, in Wellsburg, and died July 14, 1991 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 16 days.
Funeral services were held on July 18 at 2 p.m. at the Rippey United Methodist Church in Rippey with Pastor Cleta McQuerry officiating. Organist was Mildred Senter. The congregational hymns were "In The Garden" and "How Great Thou Art."
Casket bearers were Raymond McDaniel, David Peters, Doug Peters, George Jensen, Kirby DeMoss, and Todd DeMoss.
Interment was in the Rippey Cemetery.
"Jake" as he was fondly known, graduated from Wellsburg High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Iowa State College in Ames. He taught two years in Albion, and then moved to Rippey in 1934. He married Wilmuth Luther and they continued to live and teach in Rippey. Jake taught a total of 40 years in Rippey, having been the Vocational Agriculture Instructor, Baseball and Basketball Coach and served as Principal for 25 years. He taught math and science courses. He took a loving interest in every student and made each one feel special. Almost everyone remembers the trips he made with his vo-ag boys.
Jake was a part of the "glue" that held the community of Rippey together. He was active in the Rippey United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. Jake served on the town council. He had been active in the Democratic Party and served as Greene County Chairman. He served on the Board of Directors for the Rippey Senior Citizens Apartments. Jake was a member of the Rippey United Methodist Church; past president of the Lions Club; was Past Master of Elmo Masonic Lodge #465 A.F. and A.M. and served as secretary for years; was active in Cornerstone Chapter #64, Unity Council #56, and Emmaus Commandery #35; and Rippey Star Chapter No. 527 OES.
After Wilmuth's death in 1983, Jake continued to live in Rippey and remained active in the community. In 1984 he married Nell Boughton. Jake and Nell wintered in Brownsville, TX, but Rippey was home.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Wilmuth, and 2 brothers, Henry and Edwin.
He is survived by his wife Nell, one son Dan of West Branch; foster son Lloyd DeMoss and his wife Helen of Carroll; foster daughter Sheila Burdett and her husband Ralph of Houston, TX; step-son Raymond McDaniel and his wife Theresa of Dallas, TX; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Jake is also survived by his sister, Jeanette DeNeui and her husband Noble of Wellsburg; brother-in-law Martin Luther of Des Moines; 2 sisters-in-law, Naomi Peters and Dorothy Peters, both of Wellsburg; other relatives and many, many friends.
Hastings Funeral Home, Perry, IA, was in charge of arrangements.
