Rites Thursday For Merle Johns

Funeral services were held for Merle Johns, Thursday afternoon, Nov. 4 at the Eastfriesland Presbyterian Church southeast of Ackley, with burial in the Hazel Green cemetery. Brandt-Fritz Funeral Home of Ackley was in charge of arrangements.

Merle Jacob Johns, son of Edward and Emma Johns, was born August 16, 1908 in Clay Township, Hardin County, and passed away November 2, 1971, in the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

He attended the rural school in the area and graduated from the Wellsburg high school in 1928.

He was married to Helen Lutterman of Wellsburg on May 30, 1930.

They lived on the farm west of Cleves until 1957 when he retired to Steamboat Rock. During this time he served on the Steamboat Rock school board and the Public Library board. At the time of his death he was director on the Hardin County Rural Electric Cooperative board, having served 19 years and had also represented Hardin County on the Corn Belt Power Cooperative board at Humboldt for the past 10 years.

As a young man he was baptized and became a member of the Evangelical Church in Abbott. For the past years he attended and was a member of the East Friesland Presbyterian Church.

Those surviving are his wife, Helen; two sons, Leland of San Francisco, Calif., Dean of rural Ackley; a daughter-in-law Jane; two grandchildren, Merle Edward and Diane Kay; and his two sisters, Mrs. Carl Oelmann and Mrs. Otto Oelmann. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and an infant son.
