Rites Held For Tena VanDeest

Tena VanDeest, of Dike, passed away on Saturday, September 30, 1995, at the Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls of natural causes, having attained the age of 89 years, 2 months, and 13 days.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 3, 1995, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Dike with burial following in the Lincoln Township Cemetery, Grundy County, Iowa. Pastor Rick Johnson will officiate the service.

Pallbearers were Kenneth VanLengen, Douglas Simcox, Randall Bohlen, Darrell VanLengen, Jeffrey VanDeest and Scott Bohlen. Honorary bearers were Steven VanDeest and LaVern Middleswart.

Organist was Sharon Leerhoff and vocalists were Orval VanLengen and Vonice Hoffman. Women in charge of the flowers were Patricia Middleswart and Carol Dufel. Ushers were John Mulder and Jack Heritage.

Tena was born on July 17, 1906, the daughter of John and Antje (Nederhoff) Okones in Grundy County, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Albert VanDeest on February 18, 1930, at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg. They farmed all their lives in Grundy County.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dike. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, bird watching, and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert, in 1949; two sisters, Anna Borchers and one in infancy; one brother in infancy; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Bohlen and Diane VanLengen; and one son-in-law, Oren Bohlen.

Survivors include four daughters: Harriet Forry and husband Chester of Clarksville, JoAnn VanLengen and husband Orval of Cedar Falls, Albert Simcox and husband Jack of Cedar Falls, and Elaine Syhlman and husband Jim of Scranton; three sons: Bernard of Delhi, Irvin and wife Marcia of Cedar Falls, and Marvin and wife Mardean of Grundy Center; one brother: Harold Okones of Wellsburg; 23 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Dike Funeral Chapel in Dike was in charge of professional arrangements.
