Steven J. Hayes, 61, of Grundy Center, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, January 29th at his home in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 1st from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, 509 4th St., Grundy Center, IA. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 2nd at 10:30 AM at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home. Interment will follow the funeral service at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family.

One of 7 children, Steve was born on October 23, 1955 in Waterloo, IA, the son of Richard & Helen (Petersen) Hayes. He grew up in Waterloo where he went to school, later attending Columbus High School. On December 8, 1979, Steve was united in marriage to Jane Lee and the couple welcomed 4 children into their family. Steve worked for Standard Battery and Windor in Waterloo, and most recently, Bertch Cabinets, also in Waterloo, where he worked for 24 years until he became disabled.

Steve enjoyed playing cards, pool, doing crossword puzzles and showing off his yoyo skills. He was an avid baseball fan and was a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox. To say Steve had a love for music is an understatement. "Our house has always been full of music and laughter. Music helped keep our family strong. Love to all, Steve". The most important thing to Steve was his family and friends and his memory will be a light to guide them as their journey goes on without him.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jane of Grundy Center; children Nicholas (Theresa) Hayes of Grundy Center, Mackenzie (Steve Chidester) Hayes of Davenport, IA, Bridget (Anthony) Gabriel of Grundy Center and Christopher Hayes of Cedar Falls; 7 grandchildren Bethany, Shaelyn, Cash, Clayton, Ali, Casen & Hayes; siblings Patricia McCarthy of Clinton, IA, Judy McClain of Cedar Rapids, Tom (Carol) Hayes of Shorewood, IL, Rosemary Hayes of Cedar Rapids, Dennis (Nancy) Hayes and Rebecca (Jim Ickes) Hayes of Marion, IA. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law Tom McCarthy, Kent McClain & Johnny Lee and sister-in-law Judy Pates.
