Herman Abels Dies After Long Illness
Herman Abels died at his home six miles southwest of Grundy Center at 5:45 Wednesday morning, following an illness from cancer of the throat for more than a year. Last year he was at Rochester where an operation was performed on his throat in the hope of prolonging his life.
Mr. Abels was 68 years old on the 15th of last February. He was born in Carroll county, Ill., on February 15, 1877. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Abels. He came to Grundy county with his parents and other members of the family 50 years ago. The family located on a farm southwest of Grundy Center.
46 years ago on the 3rd of last May, Herman Abels and Miss Anna Stahl were married. All of their married life was spent on a Grundy county farm. The past 26 years they have resided on the same farm.
Immediate members of his family surviving are the wife and two daughters. The daughters are Mrs. Roy Redfern, Reinbeck, and Mrs. Lester Bloxham, Dike. There are two brothers living. They are John J. Abels, Grundy Center, and Henry Abels, Dike. The five surviving sisters are Mrs. Luke Abels, Mrs. John Fonken and Miss Jennie Abels, Grundy Center, Mrs. Grant Kinsinger, Marshalltown, and Mrs. Ralph Clock from Wisconsin.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the Engelkes funeral home and later in Bethany Presbyterian church, Grundy Center. Rev. F. J. Langenberg will conduct the service. Burial will be in the Colfax Presbyterian church cemetery.
