Dick Luhrs Services Held
Diedrich (Dick) Luhrs, of Holland, passed away Saturday, October 30, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center of natural causes, having attained the age of 92 years, 10 months and 15 days.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 2, at 10 a.m. at Holland Christian Reformed Church in Holland with Rev. John Kroon officiating.
Pallbearers were Dick Conrad, Jack Westerman, Wallace Wilts, George Werkman, Dan Blythe and Harlan VanDeest.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established.
Dick was born January 15, 1901, in Detern, Ostfrisland, Germany, the son of Focko and Wubke (Farenholt) Luhrs. He immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island on December 14, 1923, working first in Columbus and Hastings, Nebraska. He moved to Iowa in 1938 and married Anna Sonnenberg in September of 1942 in Holland.
Dick lived the rest of his life in Holland. He worked as a carpenter, retiring in 1981.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Anna; and three brothers, Johann, Gerhard and Enno.
Survivors include one daughter, Gretchen and husband Marley Freeseman of Clear Lake; two sons, Lee and wife Helen Luhrs of Pella, and Dennis and wife Cheryl Luhrs of Frankfort, KY; 10 grandchildren: Angela, Matthew, and Joy Freesemann of Clear Lake, Adam, Rebecca, and Aaron Luhrs of Frankfort, KY, and Sarah, Meagan, Abby and Bethany Luhrs of Pella; one great-grandchild, Jordan; one brother, Karl Luhrs of Emden, Germany; and one sister, Gretchen Broll of Detern, Germany; and special friend, Irene Toben of Reinbeck.
The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
